I think that Space Designer is a little more for 'tweakers' and Altiverb is for folks looking for a *very* good comprehensive library of preset impulses and reverb algorithms. I am not saying one is 'better' than the other, I am just saying that there is room for both in a lot of studios. I mean, Space Designer has some very good presets as well, but I find them to be slightly more 'special effects' or 'sound design' orientated, whereas Altiverb has some of the best 'natural space' presets available.
