Subject: a few G5 questions and HD allocation.
Message #235412
my main comp is a dual G5 (powerPC) running at 2GHz w/ 2 GB of RAM at the present i'm using several external FW drives for audio and to stream samples. one of the drives is a Glyph GT050 (160GB) that i stream my BFD kits from. the thing is that the cymbals FREQUENTLY get cut off and it doesn't seem to stream w/o drop outs 80% of the time. so in regards to samples cutting out, would this change with a FW800 connected drive (as opposed to the FW400 the Glyph drive is?) OR is it the speed of the HD itself?--being that connection wouldn't matter @ FW400 speeds? (the drive is specifically GT050160 and runs at 7200, 8MB cache, and has a sustained transfer >36 MB/sec, 8.2 mssec seek time-- these are solid specs for an external HD) would getting an additional internal drive matter (one with a larger cache) and having the samples stream from there? there are alot more samples being streamed than tracks of audio in my projects, so would you advise tracking audio to external drives and keep all samples on an additional internal SATA drive? i thought i was being smart about keeping only BFD samples on one drive and all other streaming samples(EXS, etc) on another drive. if i move ALL my samples (incl the BFD samples, exs, etc) to the added (2nd) internal drive am i going to run into the same problem? i'm hoping that using a FW800 will make the difference... thanks in advance for the assistance~ tv
