Had a thought to load a brand new project. Tried a new instrument
project as a test. That actually played fine. Looked back at the problem
project I had and I had the Adaptive Limiter on the main bus. Disabled
that and presto. It was back to normal. I didn't think about this
earlier because I tried the low latency option which switched off some
stuff (not totally clear on that yet) but it didn't effect the
performance timing so I guess it didn't change the... just checked, yeah
it didn't switch off the master plugin.
So it works now. Thanks for being a sounding board. :-P
