I've actually found the Fireface MIDI port by far the most reliable of
all the MIDI interfaces I've used with the Logic Control, running
under Logic 7.1.1 on a titanium powerbook 1GHz. Unless it's a faulty
unit, I doubt that's the problem.
It might be worth trashing the control surfaces prefs:
~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.cs
And perhaps the system MIDI prefs:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist
~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.MIDI.xxxxxxxx.plist
Also check that you have only the MIDI drivers you need installed in
/Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers/
Another possibility: in Logic >> Preferences >> Control Surfaces

Preferences, there is a setting that specifies the max MIDI bandwidth
the control surface can use. You could try increasing that.
Otherwise, the suggestion about song complexity may apply - writing
automation does use considerable CPU, and if there are large numbers
of audio regions to display, Logic may just be choking when asked to
write multipe tracks of automation at once. Do you have the automation
visible? Try turning automation view off if so.
