A friend has asked me to help him record a female singer he is
working with, and the artist in question is looking for a more modern
vocal sound (think Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, etc. - lots of
layered vocals, doubling, edits, etc.) than what I typically do --my
style (both as a musician and an engineer) is more, well,
traditional, relying on great performances over editing and a
generally more intimate, singular and less dense vocal sound overall,
especially for the lead vocal(s).
Are there any good tutorials or articles online that might help me
get more familiar with modern vocal production tricks and techniques?
From listening to some of the sample tracks I've been given I have
a lot of ideas as to how to go about this, but I think it would be
worth my time to bone up on how these vocal sounds are best achieved.
Even though my style is more rooted in a generally older sound (the
vast majority of my favorite recordings are prior to 1975 or
thereabouts) I figure it can't hurt to be more familiar with modern
approaches as well.
We will, of course, be recording and mixing this project in Logic.
TIA,
Brian
