Subject: Mixing - back to basics
Message #230313
Hey all, I just read an interesting little article on the net, found at the following URL: http://www.mindspring.com/~mrichter/dynamics/dynamics.htm It deals with how people seem to be getting louder in the mix and therefore losing sound quality. I know I've been guilty of this in the past too, but I hope I've refined my mixing a little anyway. It's good to keep in mind in any case, as I can see where the more you add to the mix, the more you're at risk of clipping the thing. Here's a two-prong question though: When using digital instruments, and MIDI, there's no wave form. It might sound like a dumb question, as I assume all of the samples are well and truly NOT clipped at the get-go, but first of all, is it even possible to clip a sampled sound in a mixdown? And, if so, is there a way to 'see' you're going to clip the mixdown before you actually bounce the track? With live instruments, you can see when you clip in the wave... with MIDI, how can you know? While I'm here, does anyone know of a good thread/site dealing with this sort of thing (i.e. the art of mixing)? All the best, m.
