Again, the FMR stuff is very well liked, and while I have never used
it, I have some people I know who are very pleased with their stuff.

Well, the guitar pedal idea wouldn't be high on any list of mic pre's
I'd suggest. Go with the FMR... or spend more $$$ and get a UA LA
610, a great mic pre, comp combo with s couple of bands of shelving
EQ, all tube, very sweet sounding. the price is closer to $1500 or so
though.
