Just do as the pop up text says: Select a region! Without any region selected you have no MIDI content to edit. As soon as you select a MIDI region the MIDI notes of that region will show up in the Matrex edit window and you can edit them. You can also "paint" in notes with the mouse using the pen tool, if you like. Maybe your problem simply was that you had not recorded anything?
