A common misconception (unfortunately), but virtual memory is NOT the same
as
swapped out memory.
What you want to look for is the number of pageins/pageouts and the amount
of
swapped memory. That's an indication of being low on physical memory.
If you are seeing large amounts of VIRTUAL memory being used in combination
with small amounts of real memory, it only means you are using a very nice
operating system, because that's the amount of memory you would have used
without dynamic libraries, shared text segments etc etc. That's why it's
called virtual. It's the amount of memory the application thinks it's using
(which does INCLUDE swapped out memory).

We really need to get this myth out of the world. Can it be added to the
FAQ? :o)
Maurits.
