Sound quality is driven by converter quality and latency is is as a direct function of the driver quality. Apogee Symphony seems to be the current champ for sound and low latency but may be a lot more I/O & $$$ than you need. Under this are the RME solutions that have recently been updated to support PCIe. The Multiface2/ Digiface, HDSP 9652/ 9632 are all fine sounding, low latency and have the BEST software & hardware interface features on any system I've ever seen. PCIe will always offer lower latency and less CPU drain than any firewire system.
