I've recorded big bands before, and realistically if your Drummer, Bassist and Lead Horns (1 Trumpet, 1 Sax,1Bone) have cans on the rest don't really need them( except if the tune requires say the pianist to start off solo) . However, I would suggest several sessions of practise in cans, for these young players if this is their first studio experience.
