Subject: [LUG] Big Band Multitrack recording in the Field
Message #224307
I know this doesn't relate specifically to Logic, but with the wealth of recording experience on the LUG, I'm sure some of you will have great input for my situation. I'm working with a local high school music program and regularly record their concerts, but the director and I thought would be a great experience to give the Jazz Band (Drums, Bass, Piano, Gtr, 5 Saxes, 4 Bones, 4 Trumpets) a "studio" recording experience. The problem is I'm not equiped to provide headphone feeds for 17+ players, and as the pay is pretty minimal, I'm not inclined to purchase a lot of gear for this gig (I'm adding a mixer to my setup as it is) My tentative plan is to lay down the rhythm section tracks with the players simply all in the room together but with phones, then for the winds I'm considering using good quality monitors to play back the rhythm tracks for them to play to. I feel that if the playback is off access from the instrument mics I can acheive good enough isolation for mixing/ E.Q.ing later, but probably not enough to have individual players correct performance errors. (They are still going to have to get all the notes and play in tune on the session day...) Alternately I could provide phones if I recorded each section individually, but I'm concerned that the feel of the group may suffer if pulled apart into to many pieces. Still, one goal of not recording the entire group at once is that there's a wide range of skill levels among the students, especially between the rhythm section and the winds, so recording sections at different times allows the better players to get their tracks down without having to do multiple takes to accomadate the weaker links. Your input, especially on the idea of using playback speakers instead of phones, is greatly appreciated!
