Thanks for your replies John, Chris, Maurits, Michael and f-erence, and
sorry it's taken me so long to reply.
On 22/01/07, I asked:

That's what I ended up doing, although it took 7 DVDs (including all the
artwork scans, etc.) not 1 or 2.

I tried 3 different OS X rar programs, including SimplyRAR, but none of
them worked very well here. The files either wouldn't decompress because
of errors, or didn't compress very much in the first place, or both.
Didn't give me much confidence about trying WinRar on my rarely-used PC,
especially with the extra mucking around required to get the files onto
it, and the approx. AU$40 cost.
Even Zap didn't work as well as I thought it would. Using "diff"
in the
Terminal (thanks Maurits - I've used it a few times since you mentioned
it on this list!) I found that un-Zapped files were NOT always identical
to the original files.
Dunno what went wrong, but even a couple of zipped files wouldn't
decompress! =:-O
So I've now got a couple of piles of DVDs. Maybe in a couple of years
I'll be able to transfer them all to a nice cheap blu-ray disc...? ;-)
Cheers, Bill
