Subject: [LUG] Hard Drive Issue - Using Both 8 And 16 Mb Buffer Drives
Message #222900
Hi Folks - has anybody had any issues with this? More than likely - this is a hard to trace 'esoteric' issue - however a friend of mine started having problems with digital audio and sample Instruments playing. Basically, he was getting less performance from sampled Instruments - and he experienced clicks and General sluggishness operating the sequencer. This person is very sharp and went through all the usual updates/tests and fixes. He stated that the problem specifically happened just after he had added a second internal sata drive to his G5. According to him, ultimately the problem occurred when mixing both a hard drive with 8 MB buffer with another hard drive that had a 16 MB buffer ( the new second drive). When he swapped this second drive out ( which was working perfectly by the way) - with another drive that had an 8 MB buffer - and both of his internal drives now had an 8 MB buffer - then everything started working just fine once again Question: I know this is somewhat of an 'esoteric' issue - however has anyone else experienced any digital music problems when mixing varied hard drives together - some with 8 MB buffers and some with 16 MB offers? BTW: He did suggest that having 'matched' buffers might be part of the cure - so 2 - 16 MB buffer hard drives might have worked fine also - however he did not test for that. Also this was based on 2 internal Sata drives for an older G5 - so I don't know if this would affect external firewire drives also... -- Thanks - RevDave CoolCat@hosting4days.com [db-lists]
