Hi Sam I upgraded to 7.2 from 4.8.1 this summer following winning a Saffire interface and USB keyboard which my old G3 wouldn't support! - I got a legit copy very cheap from a UK eBay dealer. It was dispatched from Apple UK, so presumably there were no shenanigans going on. I paid around 350 gbp, so less than your $1000. I sold all my hardware synths, mixer and outboard and I am using totally soft instruments on a G4 Mac Mini (1.25 gHz, 1 gig RAM) quite successfully. All it takes is judicious use of the freeze tracks function when CPU use gets too heavy. Years of using a slow G3 have helped me develop a way of working which is standing me in good stead now. I am delighted with the bundled instruments and have also used some of the free AU plugins extensively. I have an album of my own more than half written and currently have a track out on an ambient album in Germany, done on this system. In other words, I'm being productive. Many aspects of the software are far more rationally managed than in version 4 and Mac OS X is also generally more helpful. I found that I needed to take time to get my head round the different layout and way of working with 7.2, particularly with audio. I eventually found that it was a lot easier to do a total replace of the environment when I imported a version 4 song - but then I wasn't trying to keep synth environment objects with their custom banks. The only thing I have had ongoing trouble with is saving and organising my own EXS24 instruments in the folders of my choice - this is something to do with permissions and it isn't stopping me from working at all. Another odd issue has been using the free Universal Sound Banks UVI Player with the demo banks. There are some extremely usable sounds in these banks, and I'd be quite happy to eventually buy the full versions, but for the fact that sometimes it plain won't play, though it will install an instance. This nothing to do with CPU hit, as it can do this when it is the first thing you install! Tony Thompson http://www.myspace.com/coolwight
