Although I never tested it myself, i've been repeatedly told that the cpu overhead required by ATA?IDE drives, vs. SCSI drives is tremendous and steals system performance. Other than this, I'd be (further) guessing and would suggest checking the drive's settings. Maybe you have "write verify" turned on or something else like this that dramatically effects performance.
