I can use the RME FF800 with my G5 2X2 connected to the FW800 port and
I have no problems doing 8 simultaneous tracks at a time into Logic
Pro 7.2.2 or any other version of Logic I have owned over the last
couple of years.
I've never really checked to see what kind of CPU load was coming from
the CPU, because the CPU load has never been an issue.
Your set-up is obviously different than mine, and a lot of things can
change your performance when recording. I've always use the FF800 as a
direct i/o box into my FW800 port. The chain is typically: Microphone,
mic-pre, comp/limiter, FF800, and into Logic Pro.
I have used the FF800 and Logic Pro in conjunction with my ADAT XT-20
where I would transfer some old sessions that were mixed back in the
days of ADAT recording, and I had good success. However, I found that
Logic's sync worked better as the master instead of the slave. So I
would start the ADAT Sync process from Logic instead of starting Logic
from the ADAT.
Trying to start from the ADAT using Logic as the slave was always a
problem with this set-up. But, when I used Cubase SX as the slave in
the same situation, Cubase worked perfectly as the slave.
Maybe this is some info you can use that will help, or maybe not.
I've had good response from RME in the past. Maybe you should try
going through the dealer that sold you the FF800, and have them
contact RME directly.
Cheers
