I don't run anything like as complex a setup as most of the people on here seem to, but I have been a mac user for many many years and have always found that things go best when I employ a regular maintenance routine. My setup includes an iBook G4 with a FF800 on the FW port, a Lacie d2 HD connected to the FF via a FW800 port, a Lexicon MX200 connected via USB, and a typical set of applications open would be Logic Express (7.1.1) iMovie HD, Soundsoap 2, I typically use 4 or 5 instances of MH channel strip, and the MX200 au plugin. I don't do much with soft-synths. In OS9 and before that meant regularly resetting pram, rebuilding the desktop at regular intervals, and running something like Disk Warrior weekly. Since I have upgraded to OS 10.4 I haven't had a compatible version of Disk Warrior, but I repair preferences and run fsck from the command line (hold down command-s at startup to enter the unix shell directly) weekly and also I make sure to shut down the whole system at least once a day. I don't really consider any of this to be unreasonable, just normal maintenance. Heat alone causes errors to creep into RAM, plus (at least in the past) many developers utilize PRAM in ways that Apple specifically tells developers not to, all of which can lead to unexpected problems. When I stick to this routine I don't have problems. When I forget to do these things I occasionally have an application freeze and need to hard restart, (but honestly it almost always involves Firefox) I've experienced one Logic crash in several hundred hours of use, and I attribute that to a clock conflict when I was using the SPDIF outputs of the MX200 without giving it a master clock source from the FF800... (The only lingering issue I do have invloved how Logic computes how much recording time is available on my Hard Drive.... but that's a different story all together... ) I'd love to hear what others have to say about regular maintenance routines and what they do...
