This is a reply to #218155.
The thing is, I have this friend who runs a big (BIG) studio, and he switched from PC to Mac a few years back - bought a brand new top of the line G5 dual. They changed every part in that machine too. They claim it was the main board, he himself is not so certain. He runs Pro Tools of course, and he seems to have almost as much problems as myself. So Pro Tools in itself doesn't seem to fix the problems. He has just ordered a PC, throwing the G5 out. But I really hate Windows, I cannot go back... I have this other friend with a home studio my size. This guy has been a Mac guy from the start (actually I was too, when I was a kid and computers were only things that companies owned, my dad had a few early Macs since he was a journalist, and I'll tell you this - the Macs were NEVER stable, whatever people say, but I do say I prefer the old Bomb symbol to the happy little spinning ball, it was more honest somehow) and he claims he never have problems. But every time I am there he restarts the computer several times and weird things happen - and he doesn't seem to notice, it's like he's fixing things by default, in his sleep, like it is an unnoticable part of his working procedure. Then he will actually say all works fine. Talk about closing your eyes. It's like we expect nothing more somehow. We settle for Annoying since, at least, it's far better than Disaster. Regarding stability. I have my Powerbook 1 GHz (15"), which never caused problems. And I had an old PC (350 MHz PII) that never caused problems. All other computers I have owned have seriously pissed me off. And stability seems to be going down at the same pace as prestanda and clock speed is going up. My view is this: a Ferrari that breaks down every two kilometers is only faster than a Lada on paper. Sure, you'll enjoy the wind in your hair those two kilometers, but you'll lose the race. Give me stability, and I will give you a lifetime of love and loyalty! :) In defence of my G5 - Logic is the only application that crashes, more or less. In defence of my MOTU and other gear - it all worked flawlessly on the single 1.8 GHz that I borrowed when my G5 was in for service like ten times. So, it may be a combination of gear, power surge, software, whatever. Point is - it is all too fragile if the customers have to figure these details out in order to get the stuff to do its job. "Oh, the TV you bought from us is not working well? Hmm... What's the color of your sofa, and do you happen to live in an area with a lot of pine trees in the vicinity maybe? Have you tried reinstalling all channels? Oh, you have - but have you done it today? Have you opened it up and replaced the tubes? Try just wiggling them a bit, they might be bad. If you drive back to us, at your own expense, we can take your TV and replace it part by part and you'll have it back in a few weeks - of course we won't be t4esting it with the cable box YOU are using so it might still not solve the problems, but hey, you are just the customer you know... No, we cannot exchange your TV for another, see, we are not responsible - we just make the TVs and sell them. Somehow that makes you responsible. The next time you call you will have to talk to someone else and start telling everything from scratch again by the way. Ooops, coffey break." Logic crashed five times so far today, in less than 30 minutes. It's hard to record vocals when you have to do it one line at a time and then restart. I hate this. I am sure I can fix it - with time - I have done it so many times before. The whole re-install, defragment, delete prefs blah blah routine. Problem is - I am doing this much more often than I should, and I feel it is really not my job. It is Steve's Jobs (ha ha ha - sorry, hysteria is the mother of really bad jokes). Cheers, Daniel PS: If any other people have some solutions, please raise your voices with suggestions, apart from reinstalling the whole damn computer. That undeletable Unused Block is driving me crazy. I have re-saved the whole song as a Project on another drive to lose all redundant files, and I have deleted all the backup versions and the undo list to avoid Logic refusing to delete trash because it is used by an earlier song version etc. Help!
