Subject: [LUG] FW Hard drive and 3/4 express controller advice
Message #216874
Hello fellow LUGGERS, I finally received my Apogee Ensemble a couple of weeks ago (fortunately it was worth the LONG wait) so now it is time to do some serious work which means getting a large and fast external hard drive for my Macbook Pro. Since I am also planning on getting the SSL Duende when it is Intel compatible, I think I should go with a Firewire card in the express slot. So far, the only one shipping that I know of is the NitroAV FireWire800/1394b Professional Express Card (34mm) Interface Adapter. Does anyone have experience with this card ? Any others to recommend ? In regards to hard drives I was considering getting a mirrored raid, mostly because I like the idea of not worrying about losing data with a fatal crash. Maybe something along these lines. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/MirrorRAID/ I won't be working with huge sessions so I think the drive will be fast enough to keep up, even in the mirrored configuration. However, I am concerned about bogging down the Macbook (2 GHZ) processor or creating FW bottlenecks by going with the mirrored raid. Thanks in advance for any advice and insight from this wonderful list. Chris Crofford
