I use AppTrigga2 for this. You just insert it as a plug-in on
the track, drag your sample that you want to trigger and set a
couple of parameters and you are good to go either totally
replacing your original track or mixing the two. I also never
had any luck with Logic¹s audio to MIDI feature. I think others
have gotten it to work, but AppTrigga worked right away for me.
The firm is called something like Apulsoft...try a google search.
