It occasionally comes & goes. Very annoying. It only occurs when playback is stopped. I have found neither cause nor solution and would also like to know if anyone on forum has info re this. I also occasionally get "error while trying to synchronise audio and midi" click the window closed and move on. I also am using the AP2496 - have had it many years. The sound seems satisfactory though i have only the built in Mac IN & OUT to compare it with. I doubt theses things are caused for the reasons you state. I've done both with no resulting problems.
