Subject: Re: [LUG] Please no Win98lite-war again
Message #21622
This is a reply to #21615.
I'm not interested in starting any flame wars either, but the facts remain: 1) Win98Lite or any other similar utility which messes around with internal dll/shelll structures of windows effectively creates a hybrid version of windows. Hybrids are NOT supported by Microsoft, NOT supported by Emagic or ANY software publisher. All complex Win98 applications nowadays are dependent on communicating with certain versions of dll:s. If any of these dll:s are replaced by older versions, anomalies can and will happen. 2) Both IE4 and IE5 don't consume any extra CPU-cycles while they're idle. 3) Active desktop / menu animations can easily be turned off with standard windows GUI. 4) The performance of audio applications doesn't improve in any way after installing Win98Lite. If installing Win98Lite cures some problems you are having with your system, fine. But it also means there was something seriously wrong with the system before, and that something might still lurk somewhere. I've never seen any LAWP related problem (like "CPU too slow") which was directly CAUSED by Win98. All the time, the real reason for the problem was elsewhere. Here's some typical reasons: 1) Faulty hardware (memory, motherboard, HD) 2) Overclocked CPU / FSB 3) Bad soundcard / display adapter drivers or drivers not installed correctly 4) Low-quality standard IDE-cables (should use UDMA/66) 5) Incorrect BIOS settings. 6) Too many CPU-intensive background applications running. So far, I've managed to fix all the problems my clients were having with LAWP. I just consider "Install Win98Lite" as "bad advice", and I think I have the right to say so. -- Affe - http://www.vip.fi/~affe/ ICQ#31380046
