Subject: [LUG] latency problems/RME HDSP9652
Message #216042
Is it just me or is the feature lacking in todays G5's usable latencies? My G5's are really powerful, as long as I use a I/O buffer of 512 samples. That's nice for mixing, but not an option for tracking. I(we) need to be able to use our G5's with a reasonable processor load at a latency of max 128. Bands recording in my studio need to really play the AU instruments that will end up in the final mix, using some old Roland MIDI module in the tracking stage will kill the vibe, and, what is even worse, people will automatically adapt their playing style to the sound they hear. Eg, recording a piano part with patch a on some outboard MIDI device will invariable sound weird when switched to AU plug B in the mixing stage. The Achilles' heel in my situation may be the use of FireWire audio interfaces. Tried them all, on FF400, 800, with extra PCI FW cards, etc. Metric Halo and MOTU are best, latency wise, but still I can't get a big EXS piano patch, the EVB3, the EVD6, Stylus RMX and say an instance of Moog Modular running reliably @ 128, Oh yeah, I also need at least 2 instances of SD and maybe 2 instances of guitar amp, plus some light stuff like eq's and compressors. I'm not talking about huge projects here, I never record more than 1 AU plug in and 3 audiotracks at the same time. At a buffer of 512, the above setup takes maybe 25% CPU on my dual 2.7 G5 with 3 GB of RAM. Disk load is non-existent/barely visible. But @ 128, this will glitch/crackle at some point. My dealer will give me a Lynx AES card and interface to try out, but I'm also looking for something a little less expensive, The RME HDSP9652 looks like it may fit the bill. I can connect my 896 and FF800 via their adat ports to the card. Is anyone using a similar setup with a 128 buffer? No glitches at 50% processor load? How does the 9652 cope with sync when you connect 3 different audio interfaces to its ADAT ports? Any insights much appreciated, Best, Zip
