Wouldn't it be nice to be unencumbered by progress? About 5 years ago, this list was invaluable in helping me make the switch from LAW to LAM and getting me going on my new (then) MDD DP1.25. This post has everything to do with the hardware and software I use with Logic so I think this is the best place to ask questions about it. As my little audio post/sound design business has since diversified into video work as well, it has become apparent that I need to upgrade to something a bit stronger. I thought it might be wise to query the collective on my approach before I lept into the flames of compatibility oblivion. I'll be financing this purchase, so I'd really like to get 5 years out of this new rig as I've done quite successfully with my present one. I also need to be up and running as soon as the change is made. I can't afford to wait for some new SW/HW version to be made compatible. I'm looking at the Quad G5 PPC, fully loaded with a Magma PCI Express to PCI chassis. I'm banking on the notion that almost 5 years is likely to be the time period that software will continue to be supported for the PPC platform before the Pro Apps and others become Intel based exclusively. Any thoughts? My rationale is that it isn't like an OS change, eg OS9 to OSX, that people can and would migrate to quickly. Getting everyone changed to new hardware takes longer. Much like the last time Apple changed processor platforms. Here's my rig. I'm only listing stuff I can't live/work without. Near term possible additions include Duende and/or TC Powercore, 1 or 2 more UAD-1 cards, Algorithmix. Looking at some kind of Raid/fibrechannel external array. My open issues are: ECC vs Non-ECC Ram (At 16gB, there's a hefty price difference.) Effectiveness of Magma chassis for expansion/throughput for UAD and RME stuff. Still iffy on the PPC vs. wait for Intel thing. Ya' know, am I playing Russian Roulette? It should be normal to feel anxiety about this, right? Will I need therapy? (Sniff...sob, I need a hug.
