This is a reply to #215972.
Jen, The red record button beside the track arms the track for recording (IE selects it as a target for certain things - notes played from a midi keyboard, modwheel data from wiggling the modwheel, etc etc) but does not actually record anything in and of itself. By default, a track selected by clicking on it becomes the record-armed track. So to begin actual recording, click the mouse on the destination track to select it and arm it if you haven't already, then whack (or gently press) the * key on your keypad, which is the actual record button. The song position line will start scrolling along, you'll see highlighted action on your selected track, and you'll probably hear the metronome ticking as well, which you may want to mute (there's a key command for that but I forget the default, I changed mine), or you may want it playing along to help you.
