I just did a remote recording with Logic / MBP > MOTU 828 > FW HD I did not get any crashes but there was a FW problem that resulted in occasional "blank" spots in the recording. Disconnecting the FW drive and using the internal fixed the problem. I did not try MBP > FW HD > MOTU 828 - too little time to screw around & I know the internal drive performance is really good.
