I am a long time tablet user and absolutely love it. I have constructed a
series of small, self-contained control surfaces which have intergrated
Wacom tablets for more comfortable, deskless use. These allow me to work
very long, navigation-intensive sessions with zero muscle fatigue/carpal
irritation.
As for configuration, I find it essential to use "mouse mode"
which does not follow absolute mapping. This allows for smaller muscle
movements to more quickly traverse equivilent screen distances.
The only downside I find to using tablets is that one most put down the
pen for most non-navigation activities, such as playing the keyboard or
knob/fader manipulation. It is possible to type with the pen in your
fingers, but the ergonomic sensibilty of doing this for extended periods is
questionable...
Cheers,
