Hi Colin- I would suggest that you find someone to walk you
through the program a bit. If you were coming to it fresh,
it would probably be easier but when you already are
proficient with an entirely different paradigm, making the
switch easily can be tougher. Where do you live?
I do think that Logic offers a lot more power in this sense
than DP (which I admittedly don't have as much experience
with). But I also think that the "learning curve" associated
with Logic is exaggerated.
The "crashes" you were getting with the AU validation tool,
for example, are normal. It happens once in the beginning as
Apple complains about standards compliancy with 3rd party
manufacturers. Patch names and synth editors (and by that I
mean some VERY sophisticated ones) are available from places
like www.swiftkick.com ...in fact, I suspect that the Sounddiver
beta that has been available as a download forever probably has
a bunch of the presets built in (I could be wrong).
But presets aren't really static. They get changed and replaced.
I do think that I had to use a piece of freeware once to pull the
patch names off my K200 years ago. But then I modified a bunch
of them. Then came software instruments (which have almost
totally replaced my hardware synths) of which Logic has a very
generous assortment. Give it a few more days. Logic CAN be very
complex. But it can also be set up to be very simple to use. Did
you use the setup assistant? That might be a place to start...
best, Nathan
