I had a whining noise in my Firewire 410 and all my gear is fed by a Furman line conditioner. The sound was not like you describe but a steady tone around 330 Hz. Maybe it was the processor but who knows how a processor is suppposed to sound. It had definitely to do with the Mac and that interface because I unplugged everthing, left just the iMac G5, the 410 and headphones and the noise was here. I could almost tame it by sending the monitor mix through a small mixer but then I bought a Saffire and the noise was gone. I was not happy with that device, bought a RME Fireface instead and it is also quiet. I do not know how one can test such a setup. Your friend could try another interface and you could try her interface on your computer. If the sound remains with one pair you know at least where the failure is. But if both combinations are quiet, hm. That would just tell that this particular 410 does not properly work with this particular computer. Btw, my noise wasn't always here, it came after one year, approximately. ___ Peter Ostry
