I don't have that much experience with Macs but this sounds like a
graphic card failure. The pink/blue lines sound typical of a graphics
card going south.
Can't you boot off a CD?
Did you unplug the machine and let it sit for 30 minutes.
The only other scenario relating to DFD is if OSX was creating huge
swap files, filled the system drive and over-wrote some preferences
or graphics related files.... doubtful.
