The prevailing wisdom is that in general, you will save yourself a lot of problems by adding an additional firewire bus, either in the form of a cardbus solution for laptop, or a PCI card in the case of a desktop machine. I'm having great success with a FW800 PCI card that I purchased from NewEgg.com. It's by Sabrent and it's only $34.
