The MacBook Pro is the fastest laptop that Apple has. If you search
this list, there were some posts recently indicating that the MBP
surpasses a G5 in some ways and lags slightly behind in others. I
don't think that you'd be sacrificing performance really based on those
earlier posts but.... read on.

The biggest question to ask *today* is (and it is a question to
yourself), do you use any 3rd party plugins or just Logic's own
plugins. There are currently no 3rd party plugins which are compiled
to run on Intel-based Apple machines. That means that you'll be stuck
using Logic's own plugins for the short-term. Some developers have
provided a timeline for expected releases of Universal Binary versions
of their plugins. If it is anything like when developers were updating
to OSX versions from OS9, you've got quite a wait. I don't expect to
be able to run Logic on a MBP (or any intel based machine) until the
end of the year at least.
Anyway, to re-iterate, if you use only Logic's plugins (or if you won't
miss your 3rd party ones), a MBP is a great machine. Were that my
situation, I'd be all over a MBP today. However, I rely too much on
3rd party plugs today. I do use quite a few of Logic's own plugs (and
there are some great ones there IMHO) but there are no Logic
replacements for UAD, URS, Waves SSL, as well as some virtual
instruments (like Spectrasonics, Arturia, Native Instruments, etc.).
