Subject: Re: MacBook Pro vs Desktop
Message #211886
Dia dhuit, Dermot :-) I recently purchased a Mac Book Pro 2.0 with 2 GB RAM, and am very impressed with it. While I haven't had time to conduct exhaustive tests or use it for any real work, in terms of CPU speed I find it is pretty much in the same ballpark as a 2 x 2 G5, and not all that much slower than the 2 x 2.5 G5 I have been using for the past year and a half. I have been able to run mixes copied from my G5 of live recordings with 30 24 bit audio files, all running from the MBP's internal HD, with comps and eqs on most tracks as well as some Space Designers and other bus effects. I also copied over some larger studio projects, with maybe 60 audio and instrument channels, lots of overdubs etc. The things that are lacking compared to the G5, are the same expandibility, as it has only one FW 400 slot, 2 USB slots, I have not as yet found a source for a FW PCI Express card for it. I would prefer to have some extra FW connections in order to spread the load of Audio interface, external HD and Powercore FW. The other disadvantage at present is the lack of UB versions of many 3rd party Plugins for intel macs, but that will surely change in the months to come. All in all though, its performance would be good for a desktop, for a notebook it is quite amazing IMHO. HTH, kind regards Mark Cahill
