I had to do an update of a TV theme and somehow the mix of version 2 didn't sound as good as the original. I learnt the EQ of version 1 and applied it (can't remember the %) to the new mix. The result - consistency between the two and a much better sound. Obviously, your best results will come from your source and destination having similar orchestration/instrumentation/genre etc. You can't expect to use a Steely Dan mix and apply the EQ to an arrangement of a Bach Orchestral suite.....
