I didn't have time to check how reliably this works but the technique of packing the automation tracks into a folder (within the automation window) to create alternate mixes seems to work by just muting or un-muting folders (as opposed to unpacking it). The caveat seems to be that the automation plays but doesn't display in the arrange as TBA.
