Subject: [LUG] Summing Advice
Message #207213
GlacierHi, I'm looking for advice on Mixing (and somewhat Mastering) in Logic. Reason for the post is I have 2 options, and want to know what might be best. 1. I Route each track out of Logic to a EMU 1820m PatchMix (software mixer, comes with the card). They would then be summed here to 2 track stereo and routed back to Logic to record that. I don't use any plugs or effects from the EMU this is all done in Logic with either UAD or Waves plugs. Once I have the stereo track recorded, I then master it (as well as I can!) with the PSP Vintage Warmer to fatten and max the loudness, also maybe UAD Pultech for eq. I then print that and dither down from 24-16 bit then burn to CD. 2. Route all the tracks in Logic and only use the PatchMix to monitor the mix. Once all the levels and processing is done, then slap the Vintage Warmer across the main stereo outputs, tweak and then print that. Then dither the stereo track down to 16 bit and burn. I'm unable to do a proper A/B test between the 2 as the way I process is totally different...as in how I integrate the plugs (As the UAD plugs can only be used on busses once all the audio is rendered. To avoid latency) Also to be able to pan things how I want when summing in the PatchMix It's difficult to use busses in Logic. The results from both don't seem drastically different...but may my ears are not trained enough. Only thing is, is that option 2 is easier and quicker to work with.
