If the mix is going to a mastering studio I don't compress the final
mix. I don't like mastering engineers swearing at me behind my back.
If it's the sort of budget that can't go to mastering studio or I don't
trust the client (ie a TV production company) I do my own
"mastering",
which is usually a bit of Vintage Warmer multiband. Before that I used
TC Finalizer or masterX multiband compression, but it can be very hard
sounding. I love the VW, but as the others have said, do not do it till
you got the mix right.
If you can be bothered bounce the uncompressed mix, then come back the
next day in the morning with fresh ears, open up the bounced mix and
compress that.
