I never put any fx on the stereo 2mix bus. I save that for mastering.
The advantage to this is that you will have a "raw" mix from
whence
to work from during mastering. Sometimes when I'm presented
with all the mixes from somebody else for me to master, and they
have already done some of this already - and it's rarely a good thing.
If I'm doing a kind of "demo" mix for somebody to hear, I will
indeed do some kind of pseudo-mastering to give it more polish,
but this most certainly IS a demo mix.
However, there's a potentially valid method whereby some kind
of compression is placed on the 2mix which might influence the
way you mix in the first place. But I very often find that compression
sounds best on material that doesn't need it. That's kind of a hard
one to understand, but some folks will RELY on compression to
kind of "smooth" out their uneven mixes. It's always better to
perfect
the mix first.
But if it sounds good, it is good.
