Could your friend add another $100 to his budget? If so, I would recommend the Firepod. I don't have one, but everything I've seen about the Firepod (and Firebox) says they have great preamps and their Core Audio compatibility is second to none. It sounds like your friend and I are in the same place. I am about to purchase Logic Express and a FW interface. I am leaning heavily toward the Firepod/box. Mal
