The first general rule is to take things as absolutely far as you can before put compression on the output don't be tempted t to start doing that early on in the mix process. The second thing is that after you put the compression on you may find that you have to go back and make adjustments because balances will change. OTOH you could take that as an indication that you are hitting the comp too hard.... AdLimiter has a pretty frustrating GUI but it can milk a little more volume out of your mix.
