What might be considered a small amount for a desktop can be way too much for a laptop, that has a finite amount of power when using a battery. The G5 uses too much power for todays batteries. Maybe if someone made better batteries. Hey, there's an idea. Why not complain to the battery companies to make stronger batteries. > What about when using a machine for something other than audio > work, such as running a > spreadsheet to keep track of your millions in royalties? Using a computer for non musical things IS the standard. By doing music on a computer, your asking it to do things it wasn't meant to do, more or less. A computer is a glorified calculator. To use the PCI bus for specialized cards, HD's that have to be able to reliably pump through massive amounts of data, THESE are specialized functions, not day to day things. Maybe they are for YOU, but then your only one of thousands of people who might buy a new computer every month. A minority to Apple, Dell, HP, who ever. The bottom line: the G5 is designed the way it's designed. If you don't like it, take your complaint to someone who can do something about it. I have answered your questions about UA, how they have a very explicit note on their web site about how their cards work on a Mac, people have explained why they work the way they do. We are a minority of computer users who need this kind of bleeding edge performance from our machines. To think that any large company is going to expend a huge amount of resource to assist us is financially unfeasible. We buy these things knowing that there may be issues with them. I don't like it any more that you, but to complain on a list like this about it is a poor use of energy. Spend it talking to someone who can do something about it, and remember: there are OT lists if you really feel like venting. Apple has ways to be contacted if you have an issue with their computers. Try that. I speak only for me when I say this: I live with my computers limitations. Been for years. Most likely will till I leave the planet. Some days I want to throw the fricken thing out the window, sometimes I would love to take a hot poker and stick it up Steve Job's behind. So I hope I have added a little clarity to this issue for you. Why can't you put a Mac G5 to sleep and have your 3d party audio card work right when it wakes up...??? Because... just because. Take care... George ________________________________________________________ www.utopiaparkwaymusic.com Mac AND PC: The only way to fly 8-}
