In the recent past you could work around some limitations by 1) assign a midi event to a key command 2) create an environment button that outputs this midi event 3) cable the output of the button INTO the Physical Input object. Worked nicely, until they broke it some versions back. Not sure about 7.1 but last time I checked this just didn't work anymore.
