Subject: RE: WISH: More useful Multi-instruments
Message #18959
>From: "Tomer Morad" <morad@...> > >It would be very useful if the multi instruments supported: >128 instruments per bank >128 banks (lsb) >ability to send a different value for the msb byte for each instrument+bank. >(some modules use the msb byte to distinguish drums from other instruments.) >= 7*3! data bits per instrument Definitely needed feature and has been asked for a long time. Also updating more built in bank selection methods rather than using custiom bank messages. Most beginning Logic users don't understand custom bank messages nor are they aware that there are multi instruments are ready made with custom bank messages available (not all possible are in the multi enviroment song included with Logic) While a good feature when neccessary, custom bank messages should be standardized into the program for the most common ones, ie Korg's X2,3,5, type custom bank message. >There is also a need for an additional method for choosing instruments, like >the one used by xgedit. IMO midi instruments are better off organized in >groups or trees, than organized by their program number. >These trees/groups sould be able to contain instruments from different >ports: >for example, you might put under pianosclassical leaf pianos from a few of >your modules or samplers. When you select an instrument, the track's port, >channel, program, msb, lsb are all changed and sent to the appropriate port. If you use instruments routed to your multi in the enviroment, you can already do that. (Be sure to set the port output of the instrument to off or you'll get double notes sent) Select sort instrument by icons in your preferences instead of by layer. Then the icons you assign to the instruments will be grouped together regardless of what port or multi they're from. Granted you'll have to select your sounds via the instrument menu instead of multi dialog or popup menu in the instrument parameters and it could make your instrument menu list really long if you tried to include every patch in your system. It does work very well for a favorites list of sounds though. A lot of people find that they have maybe 4-8 piano sounds in their system that they always use, 4-8 basses, etc so this way works fine for them. For others who want direct access to everything in their system, this wouldn't work and your idea is one Logic could do. BTW is there any way to edit the icons you can assign to the instruments or add your own? (Besides using Resedit, if using it is possible). It'd be nice to have more icons that relate to the gear like Korg Triton, Emu E4, etc. Peter Brunner The Electronic Music Box LA's MIDI Digital Audio Experts 14947 Ventura Blvd. Sherman Oaks, Ca 91403 818-789-4250 pbemb@... http://www.midiguy.com
