Subject: [Mac] System disk cache - what size ? Also: [HELP] Mac PPC 9500 + DSPF 2416 info needed.
Message #18957
Hi all ! Sorry to re-post this mail, but I haven't received any feedback after yesterday's posting yet. This one should land on your morning desktops, hopefully. Please hit "Delete" if not interested. I'd like to get clear on the subject of the size of the _system_ disk cache size under Mac OS 8.6 when used with Logic. I remember Markus Fritze posting on it some time ago but in a different context, so maybe he would be kind enough to comment again. ________________________Tha questions :___________________ 1) To what extent ( if at all ..) the size of _system_ disk cache ( inside "memory" control panel ) matters when using Logic ?. What size _exactly_ should I set it to in order to gain the best performance ?. And please don't answer "default" as it varies from one OS version to another. 2) Does this setting affect my hard disk recording performance even if , as it is in my case, for recording audio I use a dedicated ultra 2 SCSI HD attached to Adaptec 2940 U2W controller ?. I am still undergoing a nightmare trying to make my Yamaha DSP 2416 card work fully under Logic. I shall present a separate report on that in another mail soon. For now, suffice to say that I tried _every_ trick imaginable (as well as patenting a few new ones in the process..) trying to achieve glitch-less playback of more than 4 channels ot once, with no success to date. One of the few more variables I haven't tried yet - is playing with _system_ disk cache settings. Hence - I would like to learn if changing that has _any_ meaning and relation to hard disk recording setup based on a dedicated SCSI HD for audio work attached to it's own SCSI controller. Also, before I submit my full "cry for help" post with detailed description of my DSPF problem, let me ask : ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Is there anyone on this list who managed to use the 9500 machine with DSPF succesfully ( ie: _all_ 16 tracks glitchless ) in any possible hard/soft/OS configuration under Logic Platinum v4.0 through to v4.1.5 ? ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• A note to all of you good souls out there who might want to rush with possible solutions to my drama : Please refrain from posting _any_ tips just yet. Let me present the problem in full in a day or so, and that way you'll know what I have tried already and what I haven't. Doing so we won't waste bandwith of the list with the tips I might have already thought of. Thank you. For now, please contact me privately those of you who are using Mac PPC 9500 with Yamaha's DSPF 2416 under Logic in any possible system configuration succesfully ( ie: with _all_ 16 tracks crystal clear ...). _________________________________________________________ ••••••••••••••••• No fancy footnotes •••••••••••••••••• _________________________________________________________ peace 24carat
