Guys,
RMX is so cool. We have been discussing different ways to drag and drop
midi regions for RMX loop slice playback to Logic tracks. That's fine.
But when using midi regions on tracks you miss out on some of the
wonderful chaos functions of RMX. Yesterday I found another way of
using RMX in Logic that will actually let you draw curves for
automating all kinds of random changes in the performance. The point is
that you don't have to be limited to absolute control of any detail of
the arrangement (yes, I know some of you actually like that) but you
will be able to set up RMX as an instrument for generative music (I
like that!). You can gradually make the snare drum lag behind the beat
at the same time as the hihat starts getting more and more of those
reverse samples while the bongos gradually starts falling apart into
random pitched hits - until the entire kit gets back into the right
timing after that monster fill... kind of ;-)
The trick is very simple:
1. Open a Hyper Edit window (need to select a midi region)
2. Create a new hyper set and name it RMX (or whatever)
3. In the parameter box to the left, set "Status: Control"
4. Set "midi channel 1" to address RMX part 1 etc (given the RMX
instrument is generally set to "midi channel All")
5. Still in the Hyper Edit's parameter box, hold down the mouse button
for the controller numbers (right under the channel setting area). You
will see the predefined RMX parameters start at cc 64, named "Stylus
RMX#1".
6. Open the RMX window and start tweaking the cc 64 parameter. You will
find that it controls RMX's "Start playing part 1".
7. So, name that row of your RMX hyper set ""1 on/off".
8. Create a new row in your RMX hyper set, set it to cc 64 and name it
"Play All" (because that's what it does.
9. Keep on creating new rows for all RMX functions. Some are not
predefined and you will then need to use the midi learn function of RMX
to hook it up.
The only drawback I can think of with this method is that it's so cool
so you want to bring it into all the songs you are currently working on
- but then there is no way in Logic to export/import Hyper Sets
(right?). So you need to keep it as part of your autoload.
It's funny that I have been wishing this kind of "real-time/automation
control over Logic's playback parameters" for ages but Emagic never
looked into it. Now it's possible, thanks to Spectrasonics and Logic's
deep midi implementation.
