Metric Halo and Tascam FW1884 both sound fantastic in their own
ways. The MH is, depending on your perspective, either more
"open" in the air band, which is what my partner in crime thinks,
or more "hyped," which is what I think. I just happen to prefer my
tones darker, that's all. It sounds great no matter how you label it.
The FW1884 has Frontier converters, they've been doing good things
for quite a few years now. It's a darker sound, more emphasis on the
low-mids with a slightly understated air band. A bit more intimate.
Both units are capable of sounding warm and lush. Be warned, the
Metric Halo has a reputation for being sketchy with ADAT i/o, and my
experience bears that out. Can't get it to work at higher sample
rates (I work at 88.2 for tracks, 96k for the 2-mix). The Tascam
is an amazing control surface, but it's bulky. The MH is eminently
portable.
