Aw, the age old question. I've asked this one myself, as have
countless others. I don't have any real answers, but I thought I'd get
the ball rolling for you.
PCI is faster, by how much is the question. Latency will probably
happen (to some degree) regardless. Since you won't be mobile with the
G5, you will probably want to go PCI. When this question has popped up
before, many people chime in to say RME.

I don't use RME products so I don't know anything besides the fact that
they're popular, and expensive. Personally, I have a G5 and I use an
Edirol FA-101 firewire interface.

Why, you ask? My budget was a little shy of yours (~$500) and instead
of buying a sub-par PCI card, I decided to go firewire, so that when I
can finally afford a nice PCI interface, my firewire one won't be
completely useless (I could get a laptop to go with it). This may be
relevant to you or not, just something to think about. If you go
firewire, the Edirol is definately not bad, but the word perfect
doesn't come to mind either. Still, the Edirol will do the job nicely,
with crisp recording quality. The RME firewire is supposed to be
superb (~$1000+?). Also, the (firewire) MOTU 828mkII (~$750). I don't
think much of the M-Audio Firewire 410, but that's just from hear-say.
I don't know any specific PCI to recommend.
In releasing your question to the masses, you should probably specify
what you want the interface to be capable of. Have many in/out?
Digital in? Phantom power? etc. Good luck. Lots.

Mark Aitken
