These tests were basic clean and distorted sounds with amp simulation and such. All 3 plugins were monitored through my Digidesign 96IO interface and were all instantiated within Logic 6.3.3 They were also tested against a REAL Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier head into an isolation cabinet, mic'd with 2 x 57's and fed into an ISA220. Guitars were PRS Custom 24, Kinman Telecaster and Fender Strat. The 3 plugins were connecting via the inst in on my Focusrite ISA220 striaght into 96IO and into Logic. My results and opinion were as follows- I am working from memory here guys so forgive me if they are a little vague Guitar Port - Poorest of the lot. Thin and irritating clean sounds, poor and indistinct crunch sounds. Amplitube - Good clean sounds, great funk rhythm. Good crunch/distorted sounds but perhaps a bit lacking in character. UAD Nigel- Terrible latency but actually pretty good tones. Clean sound was weakest. Amp Farm - easily the best of the lot. TDM does make a difference. Mesa distortion sound was almost as good as the 'Real' mesa head. and.... Guitar Rig - marginally better than Guitar Port. Very, very disappointing. Dry crunch sound was extremely poor- Gratifier model sounded more like the Pacifier than anything else. Clean sounds were ok- nice funky rhythm. Just my 2 c, but if the Guitar Rig demo sounds exactly the same as the full product (cant imagine why it wouldnt) I will not be going near it. A pity really because conceptually it is right up my alley- loads of modules, backwards guitar/sampling kinda stuff. Basically after playing with the demo for a couple of days I was pretty gutted. I wont be giving up my Amp Farm for Guitar Rig any time soon I am afraid. To be honest I am extremely surprised that anyone likes it at all. JR
