Yes. The hardware you plug into the FW800 slot has to work with the
FW800 protocol.

A RME Multiface will work a lot worse if plugged into the 800 port (in
fact not at all), since it's PCI based. It just uses a firewire cable
to send data between the PCI card and the break-out box, but the actual
data is of a unique RME protocol.
